Abstract

Similarity is one of the phonetic phenomena that attracted the attention of grammarians, grammarians, morphologists, and the people of the readings, so they monitored its manifestations and explained its different aspects and its lack of controls, but this was scattered here and there in the texts of their writings, and we did not stand on a comprehensive study of this phenomenon in a single book, but we find Talking about it is partially distributed over different chapters in their writings, which include morphological, phonetic, or linguistic studies. In this easy research, we are trying to collect the fragments of what we found in the pages of the literature that dealt with linguistic studies and phonetic investigations, so that it would be - God willing - a comprehensive research. As I tracked the subject in what became available to me from the writings of our early, late, and contemporary scholars who dealt with this field, starting with the efforts of Al-Khalil in classifying the letters according to their alignment, and his student Sibawayh continued this effort and paid attention to this phenomenon in more than one of the chapters of his book, and he used more than one term for it. We will explain it in its place in the research, and then to the efforts of Ibn Jinni in this field, who is considered one of the first to present a clear picture of the natural process of speech production, and then the great efforts made by the modern scholars in the aspects of this phenomenon within their phonetic studies, as they showed that the sounds have a special direction between them. That is, its relationship is governed by certain vows and principles, so we find a sound that turns into a new sound if it occurs in a specific phonetic context, and we find a third sound that is deleted if certain conditions are met in it and in the sounds surrounding it ( ), because the language differs from the structures of its vocabulary, and its ability to internal change is clearly different. ( ) And these changes occur by a kind of influence that the sounds are exposed to in the word or in connected speech, especially those changes that occur as a result of bringing a letter closer to a letter before or after it, so the effect is to turn one of them into another sound that is similar in its characteristics or some of them to the characteristics of the affected letter and This is determined by the strength or direction of the effect.
