The Level of Writing Skills among Students of the College of Basic Education-University of Diyala

Abstract

The current research aims to assess the level of writing skills among students at the College of Basic Education, University of Diyala, specifically in the Department of Arabic Language. To achieve this objective, the researcher adopted a descriptive methodology and conducted the study on a purposive sample of 109 male and female students from the Arabic Language Department across the first, second, and third academic classes. Statistical tools such as the arithmetic mean, percentage, and standard deviation were used in the analysis, which revealed three proficiency levels in certain aspects: good, average, and weak.

      The researcher developed a measurement tool consisting of a 20-item questionnaire covering various writing skills, which was reviewed by jury members  in teaching methods. Among the skills, neat handwriting and sentence structure coordination received the highest ratings, while other skills (items 2, 4, 6, 8, 9, 10, 13, 16, 17, 18, and 19) were rated as average. Some skills (items 1, 3, 5, 7, 11, 12, and 15) were rated as weak. The questionnaire demonstrated the students' actual level of writing skills.

The researcher recommended focusing on writing skills and encouraging students to apply and understand them, as these skills are foundational. Additionally, students should be made aware of the importance of writing skills in the learning and teaching process. The researcher encourages further studies on writing, reading, and other skills, and suggests studies on the writing skills of elementary school students and reading skills of university students.
