Abstract

This study aimed to design instructional units based on the backward chaining method and to identify the effect of this method on learning the handball skills of passing and shooting among students. The researchers employed the experimental method using a two-group design (experimental and control groups) due to its suitability for the nature of the research problem.

The research sample consisted of 50 first-year students from the Department of Physical Education and Sports Sciences, College of Basic Education, University of Diyala. The participants were equally assigned to two groups, with 25 students in each group. To achieve the objectives of the study, pre-tests were administered, followed by the implementation of the backward chaining method with the experimental group through 11 instructional units. Subsequently, post-tests were conducted to evaluate the outcomes.

The results indicated that the instructional units designed according to the backward chaining method had a positive and significant effect on learning the handball skills of passing and shooting. Furthermore, the experimental group demonstrated superior performance compared with the control group, which was taught using the conventional instructional method.

These findings suggest that the backward chaining method is an effective instructional approach for enhancing the acquisition of fundamental handball skills among university students.
