The effect of harvesting dates on the processing characteristics of some rice cultivars
Abstract
A field experiment was conducted during the summer season of 1999 at Al-Latifiya Research Station, west of Baghdad, to study the effect of harvesting dates on the processing characteristics of rice cultivars, Oryza sativa L. . Four harvest dates (35, 45, 55 and 65 days) after 50% flowering and four varieties of rice were used (Aber 33, Manathera Amber, Baghdad Amber, Furat Amber). A randomized complete block design with three replications was used. Rice varieties were the main treatments and harvest dates were the secondary treatments. The harvest date was 35 days after 50% flowering, and when the moisture content of the grain at harvest was (23-25%), the highest extraction rate was (71.9%) and the highest percentage of the whole grain was (66.8%). Harvest date after 65 days of 50% flowering, and when the moisture content of the grain at harvest was between (16-18%), gave the lowest extraction rate (70.0%) and the lowest percentage for the whole grain (54.6%). The variety (Amber Furat) excelled in the average percentage of total extraction (71.4%), the average percentage of the whole grain (62.8%), the average degree of hardness (5.91 kg / cm2), and the average degree of whiteness (32.6).
